Community Shred Day

Kick off your spring cleaning by clearing out all of those old tax documents, confidential papers and any other paperwork that you should not just throw out in the trash. Hunziker & Associates, Realtors & Bankers Trust invite all of our customers and friends to bring your items to be shredded to our office at 105 South 16th Street, Ames on Saturday, April 23. A truck from Shred-It will be on site to shred your documents.

With so much emphasis being put on security both in terms of our identity and our finances it is important to ensure that every effort is made to make the identity thief's job as difficult as possible. One way of doing this is to shred all documents that may contain information about you or members of your family which may allow the identity thief to build up a picture of either you as an individual or any other member of your family.

We will have reusable grocery bags for the first 200 customers that bring in items to shred.

Go Green, Eco-Friendly, Carbon Footprint, and Environmentally Conscious.

HCS Energy Star Cool and trendy words? At HCS Builders, it is much more than that! 8 Tips for Adding Curb Appeal and Value to Your Home

Homes with high curb appeal command higher prices and take less time to sell. We're not talking about replacing vinyl siding with redwood siding; we're talking about maintenance and beautifying tasks you'd like to live with anyway.

Tip #1: Wash your house's face- A bucket of soapy water and a long-handled, soft-bristled brush can remove the dust and dirt that have splashed onto your siding and brick. Wash your windows (inside and out) and Garage Door.
Tip #2: Freshen the paint job- Your best bet is to match the paint you already have: Scrape off a little and ask your local paint store to match it. Resist the urge to make a statement with color.
Tip #3: Regard the roof- You can pay for roof repairs now, or pay for them later in a lower appraisal.
Tip #4: Neaten the yard- A well-manicured lawn fresh mulch, and pruned shrubs boost the curb appeal of any home.
Tip #5: Add a color splash- Even a little color attracts and pleases the eye of would-be buyers so plant some flowers.
Tip #6: Glam your mailbox- An upscale mailbox, architectural house numbers, or address plaques can make your house stand out.
Tip #7: Fence yourself in- If you already have a fence, make sure it's clean and in good condition. Replace broken gates and tighten loose latches.
Tip #8: Maintenance is a must- Refasten sagging gutters. Repoint bricks that have lost their mortar. Reseal cracked asphalt. Straighten shutters.

Spring Cleaning Tips

Spring cleaning is a time-honored tradition. After a long winter, you throw open the windows, let in fresh air, and scrub down the house. But modern spring cleaning presents challenges your grandmother never imagined.

While you'll need to devote a day or two to this annual maintenance project, make it less of a chore by picking the right tools and methods. Give this space-by-space cleaning guide a whirl this spring-or during any season, for that matter, when grime and clutter become unbearable.

Cleaning Think Green and inexpensive with this tip: A 64-ounce bottle of vinegar costs about $4; a 12-pound bag of baking soda, about $7. Both items can be used throughout the house. For just $1 you can mix equal parts vinegar and water in a 32-ounce spray bottle to make a terrific all-purpose surface cleaner. That's about $4 cheaper than buying a spray cleaner at the store.
