Community Shred Day 2012

Kick off your spring cleaning by clearing out all of those old tax documents, confidential papers and any other paperwork that should not be placed in the trash. Hunziker & Associates, Realtors invite all of our customers and friends to bring up to 3 boxes of items to be shredded to our office at 105 South 16th Street, Ames on Saturday, April 28 from 9am to Noon. A truck from Secure Shred Solutions will be on site to shred your documents.

With so much emphasis being put on security both in terms of our identity and our finances it is important to ensure that every effort is made to make the identity thief's job as difficult as possible. One way of doing this is to shred all documents that may contain information about you or members of your family which may allow the identity thief to build up a picture of either you as an individual or any other member of your family.

We will have reusable grocery bags for the first 50 customers that bring in items to shred.

It's going to be HOT HOT HOT before we know it, so now is a great time to ensure your air conditioner will be ready for any amount of humidity. The first thing that should be checked out is the actual unit itself whether central air or a wall unit, be sure that the unit is clear from debris and nothing is sitting on top of it. Also, to make sure that air conditioner is running to best of its ability, change the filter on the unit. Lastly, be sure to switch the unit from heating to cooling, and test it out. If you test it before it gets extremely hot, you will have your unit ready to go when the temperatures rise quickly.

Without regular maintenance an air conditioner loses about 5% of it's original efficiency for each year of operation. This means that the 12 SEER unit that you bought just a few years ago may be functioning like a 9 SEER unit today! The good news is that you can recover most of that lost efficiency through regular maintenance. Studies show that with regular tune-ups a unit will maintain up to 95% of it's original efficiency. This means that the cost of an annual tune-up is recovered very quickly in savings on your monthly electric bill and reduced repair costs. A properly serviced air conditioner will also do a better job of dehumidifying your home.

Another great way to keep your house cool during the summer months is to think about an attic fan if you don't already have one. Beside the fact that it helps cool your home, it also helps to dry out your home and keep mold and mildew from forming. Be sure to do some research as to what kind of fan is the best for your home and which one will save you the most money.

Spring Clean - Green Clean

SpringClean April is a great time to get that spring cleaning done, before the kids are done with school and you're off to the lake or summer vacations. Below are some great tips for what to get done during your spring cleaning and healthier ways to do it without the endless amount of harmful and toxic cleaners that are sold in the superstores.
  • Make your own mixture of baking soda and acidic vinegar, no harmful chemicals to inhale and won't contaminate food
  • Use the vinegar/backing soda cleaner, but instead of mopping the floor, use a wet/dry van to get the grime out of the grout
  • Use a micro fiber cloth and some water, for all types of cleaning, from greasy messes to a quick dusting of electronics
  • Flip your mattress each spring- This can make your mattress last longer
  • Think about getting your carpets, mattresses, and furniture upholstery professionally cleaned

National Volunteer Week
April 15-21

National Volunteer Week embodies the energy and power volunteers evoke on a daily basis as they lead by example-not only encouraging the people they help, but motivating others to serve as well.

Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week has grown exponentially in scope each year, drawing the support and endorsement of all subsequent U.S. presidents, governors, mayors and other respected elected officials.

During this year's National Volunteer Week celebration, thousands of volunteers throughout the country will participate in a variety of innovative, grassroot community projects designed to engage volunteers and community members in building strong, vibrant neighborhoods. This nationwide undertaking will include revitalizing community centers, rehabilitating parks, improving low-income homes, creating community art projects, mentoring, serving meals, developing community gardens and much more.

We encourage you to get involved in your community and give back by volunteering. Check with your local shelters and food banks or see if help is needed at assisted living homes or simply help by cleaning up a neighborhood park.
