Homeownership and the American Dream

For a host of financial and non-financial reasons, homeownership remains a key component of the American Dream. While we can readily list the non-financial benefits to owning a home, it is encouraging to see that real estate has now regained the top spot as the best overall investment, according to Princeton Survey Research Associates.

Our local housing market has made a strong recovery, not only in sales and prices, but also in the confidence of consumers and experts as an investment. In a New York Times editorial entitled, "Homeownership and Wealth Creation" they explain:

"Homeownership long has been central to Americans' ability to amass wealth; even with the substantial decline in wealth after the housing bust, the net worth of homeowners over time has significantly outpaced that of renters, who tend as a group to accumulate little if any wealth."

As the graph demonstrates, real estate values in Ames have appreciated modestly at a rate of 2.3% annually over the course of the most recent 13 years, and 34.2% over the entire period of time.

Household Hacks

TissueBox4Bags.png Whether your home is luxurious or simple, large or small, cluttered or clean, there will certainly be domestic tasks that you wish you could put off. Check out these clever tips and tricks to simplify household chores and projects.

  • Getting tired of all your plastic sacks taking up space? Store them in an empty tissue box and just pull one out when needed.

  • Nailpolishkeys.png
  • Mark your keys with nail polish to quickly distinguish one from another.

  • Rearranging furniture and left with marks in the carpet? Simply place an ice cube on the depressed spot and it will raise the carpet.

  • We all love our pets but getting rid of pet hair can be a pain. Use a squeegee to remove pet hair from carpets and fabrics.

  • VegOilHands.png
  • Did you know that a dollop of vegetable oil will quickly remove dried paint from your skin?

  • Can't find a ruler? Measure with a dollar bill! A dollar is six inches long so in a pinch you can use it for rough measurements.

  • As strange as it sounds, you can smooth scratches in wood floors and furniture by rubbing it with a walnut.

  • When it's time to clean out your gutters, attach some PVC pipe to your lawn blower so you can clean out your gutter safely from the ground.
